Lava Bread

A delicious combination of two holiday favorites! Sweet gooey Baklava and tender, pull apart monkey bread.

Ingredients

  • For the biscuits:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • For the sauce:
  • 1/2 C Honey
  • 1/2 C light brown sugar
  • 1/2 C water
  • 1/2 t cinnamon
  • 1/4 t nutmeg
  • 1/4 t ground clove
  • 3/4 C Chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1/2 C packed light Brown sugar
  • 1/2 t cinnamon

Preparation

Step 1

mix dry biscuit ingredients together then work shortening in quickly with your fingers until pea sized pieces are formed. add milk and mix just until dough comes together.
mix 2nd brown sugar together with 2nd cinnamon in large zip bag.
Cut dough into 1 inch cubes and toss in small batches in cinnamon/sugar mixture, dropping into greased loaf pan, sprinkle walnuts or pecans between every layer or biscuit dough.
Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes or until puffed and golden brown, and light for its size.

Step 2

Meanwhile combine all syrup ingredients in a small sauce pan and simmer for 10 minutes or until slightly thickened.
Once Lava bread has cooked completely, immediately remove from oven and pour syrup over the top. let cool 30 minutes, then enjoy.

Keep your shortening cold for the best results.
