Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup flour

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening and sugar together, add egg, mix.

Step 2

Add apples, nuts, and vanilla, mix.

Step 3

Sift in dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg) stir until combined.

Step 4

Bake in greased square pan at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 5

Sprinkle with powdered sugar (if desired), slice into squares and serve.

  4. Brush with milk (this will make the crust go golden), sprinkle with brown sugar and bake for 20 minutes at 350°F/180°C.
  5. Top with a handful of chopped pistachios, and serve!
