Grandmom's Yeast Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 1 yeast cake (or equivalent packet yeast)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 Tbs. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 5 cups flour (self-rising preferred)

Preparation

Step 1

Mix warm water and sugar in a bowl and add yeast. Let bloom.

Step 2

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Cover and keep in the refrigerator.

Step 3

Take out as much as you need to make the number of biscuits you want. About 1/4 cup per biscuit to start and adjust to suit your needs. Place on baking sheet. DO NOT LET RISE before cooking.

Step 4

Cook at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Time and temp are approximate, adjust as necessary for your oven.
