How Do You Know A Watermelon is Ripe?

,
Gourmandize

Did you know that a watermelon isn't actually a fruit, but a cucurbit

Cucurbits are cousins of the cucumber, along with squash, zucchini, pumpkin, and cantaloupe; the list could go on! They're herbaceaous, root-bearing vines that excel in warmer climates and are killed by frost.

It's August, which means our current fave cucurbit is the watermelon. Is there anything more refreshing this time of year? They refresh us with their 95% water content, and when they're ripe, they're deliciously juicy! The more red the flesh, the sweeter the taste. Unfortunately, you can't see through their thick, green skin to see if they're ripe, so we're here to tell you what to look out for so that you can get your teeth into a wedge of watermleon ASAP!

Bright Spots

When shopping, look for bright spots on the peel. A ripe watermelon has a nice yellow spot.
