Olive oil: the fundamental ingredient of the Mediterranean diet, hailed by doctors and Italian centennarians as the key to a long, healthy life. But what may appear to be the simplest ingredient in your kitchen actually hides a nasty secret...

According to a study by the University of California, 69% of "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" isn't extra virgin at all. Even the top 5 brands selling "extra virgin" in the United States failed to meet the basic legal standards 73% of the time.

Where is all this fake oil coming from? Italy, for one. In December 2016, Italian authorities unconvered a fraud ring that was extracting oil from olive pulp using chemical solvents, and labeling the adulterated, low-grade product "extra virgin" before shipping it globally.
