10. Over-Decorating

Sure, it looks pretty, but how does it taste? Unless your cookies are purely for decoration (in which case you should warn people and spray them with shellac so they last the season), then make sure they're good enough to eat! Nothing is worse than biting into a holiday cookie with too much sweet icing and candy decorations, and ending up with a mouthful of sugar. If you want to flavor the decorations, then choose flavors that marry well with your cookie base. Generally, if you plan on using a lot of icing, then make the cookie a little bit thicker; it needs to be able to hold its own against the decoration.
