Calzone

Stuffed pizza is a must-try for any pizza lover. Try this recipe for easy meat and vegetable calzones.

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade, divided into 4 portions)
  • 1/2 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 cup bell peppers, diced (any color)
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup baby spinach, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup marinara sauce (plus extra for dipping)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • Olive oil for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of olive oil. Add the ground beef or Italian sausage and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat and set the meat aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed and sauté the onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the baby spinach and cook until wilted.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and basil. Mix well.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the cooked meat, sautéed vegetables, shredded mozzarella, ricotta cheese, and marinara sauce.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each portion of the pizza dough into a circle, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
  8. Place a generous amount of the filling mixture on one half of each dough circle.
  9. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape.
  10. Press the edges together to seal, and crimp with a fork for a tight seal.
  11. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the tops of the calzones with the egg wash for a golden, shiny finish.
  12. Place the calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  14. Let the calzones cool for a few minutes before serving.
  15. Serve with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Enjoy your homemade meat and veggie calzones!
