Northern Germany, Parts Of Denmark

In Northern Germany and parts of Denmark, residents have a similar ritual to trick-or-treating that occurs on New Year's Eve. It's called rummelpott, during which both children and adults can go door to door and sing in exchange for candy (kids) and alcohol (adults). Kids often wear costumes and masks to disguise themselves from the spirits of the old year while passing into the new one. Back in the day, they carried rummelpotts, which were odd instruments made of boar or pig bladders that they'd play while singing and asking for food, candy, coins or tokens of good luck. Nowadays, people just stick to singing.
