Figs

Fresh figs are a delight when they're in season, with their juicy flesh, crunchy seeds and delicately sweet flavor. They can be enjoyed on their own or used in either sweet or savory preparations. There are hundreds of varieties to choose from, but when you hear the word 'fig', you probably visualize the deep purple kind shaped like small pears—black mission figs are the most common. Much like they vary in color, their flavor also varies with a range of floral, fruity, berry, honey and sweet aromas.

Cooking ideas: Baked into pies and tarts; used raw or roasted in other dessert preparations; boiled and reduced into jam; sliced on toast with ricotta and honey; chopped raw for salads; sliced raw for cheese and charcuterie boards; caramelized on the grill; marinated, baked or roasted; added to grilled cheese; cooked in puff pastry appetizers.
