"I have always had a great appreciation for food. There's nothing better than enjoying a meal where it's clear that thought and passion was put into creation."

Hello kakesbykatie.cake, so tell us...

When did you begin your blog, and what inspired you to start it?

I began the blog in July of 2010 when I took off to head to Germany. Initially, the blog was meant for my family and friends to be able to check out what I was doing. It soon grew when I starting getting more and more followers throughout the past 3 years.

What is your earliest food memory?

I have always had a great appreciation for food. There's nothing better than enjoying a meal where it's clear that thought and passion was put into creation. But, my earliest memory? It would definitely have to be me, dancing around in my grandmother's kitchen as a little girl while she is baking, trying to help out the best I could.

Are you involved in the blogging community - how do you attract new readers?

I was a "Blog of Note," for Blogger in 2011. This was my initial large increase in followers. Since then, I attract new readers from word of mouth as well as through social networks such as Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter.

What's the most exciting piece of German cuisine you've come across?

German cake or "Kuchen," as it's known in German. I love the variety that can come from Kuchen. It basically refers to a baked good, any shape, size or taste. If it's sweet, it's Kuchen and who doesn't love a little something sweet to eat with their coffee?

What is/are your go to recipe(s) if you’re preparing a last minute dinner or party?

I love to mix and match. I steal ideas and recipes from all over and adapt them to what situation I'm in, especially in a last minute time crunch. For example, substituting ingredients for ones that I already have at home. Specifically, I like to use anything from the Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book. The recipes are simple and always a crowd pleaser.

In the pastry world, I go for anything that can be done in a dessert glass. I would most likely make a flavored whipped cream layered with a marmalade and graham cracker crust. This way, no cakes need to be baked and the dessert is very classy and modern. Plus, each guest get's their own glass!

If you could be a contestant or guest on any cooking show what show would you choose?

Chopped. I love the pressure they put the contestants are under! However, I believe I could only survive a dessert edition of the show. I love to cook, but my skills are no where near my pastry skills!

Is there anything you've been particularly proud to show off to your new European friends cooking-wise?

I love cooking and baking for others. It's the reason I'm in this profession. I love watching people enjoy my food and was really excited to show my new European friends what we do in American kitchens. For the two Thanksgivings I was in Germany, I cooked a very traditional Thanksgiving dinner for my co-workers including an enormous turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and, of course, apple and pumpkin pie.

Is there any dish, ingredient or type of food you refuse to cook or eat?

I don't like spicy foods. This means, I don't typically use them in any of my cooking or even baking. I know a large trend out there is using chocolate and chili, but I just can't get there. I'm trying, I promise!

What are your goals for this blog? Where would you like to see it in the next year? Five years?

My goals are to keep the blog interesting, unique and inspiring! I had a girl come from New Zealand last year to start the same apprenticeship I did at the same company. We became close friends (and still are) and I hope to continue inspiring people to go out and catch their dreams like I did!
