RECALL: Energy Bars Due To Possible Listeria Contamination
(August 7, 2017) Affected products include a wide variety of health and protein bars.
Amrita Health Foods is recalling a limited number of Amrita Bars because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled Amrita Bars were distributed across the country via retail stores, ecommerce and direct purchase.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The following energy and protein bar flavors have been recalled, and were produced from April 24th, 2017 – May 31st, 2017 with best buy dates of 04/24/2018 to 05/31/2018.

- Amrita Sunflower Seed Butter, 60g (UPC 853009004414) : Best Buy date between 04/24/2018 to 05/31/2018
- Amrita Chocolate Chip Coconut, 50g (UPC 853009004391) : Best Buy date between 04/24/2018 to 05/31/2018

Steps To Take
No confirmed illnesses have been reported to public health authorities to date. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
Amrita Foods has ceased production of the affected products and issued an apology: “We sincerely apologize for this situation that occurred with one of our ingredient suppliers. As soon as our team was notified, we immediately set our recall plan into action to ensure the safety and health of our customers. Amrita Health Foods will continue to operate with the highest standard of excellence providing customers with full transparency and food safety.” said Arshad Bahl, CEO of Amrita Health Foods.
