This Saudi Arabian Princess Is Smashing Stereotypes And Saving The World

Ameerah Al-Taweel is a princess, activist, and philanthropist (among other things). She may have been married to one of the richest men in the world, but that doesn't stop her from fighting for the less fortunate. She's challenging stereotypes about women in the Middle East and making the world a better place.

Not Your Average Princess

Princess Ameerah Al-Taweel is not necessarily what you might expect when you think about Saudi royalty. At 33 years old, she serves as the Vice Chairperson of Alwaleed Philanthropies and has already been named one of the 100 Most Powerful Arab Women. With her progressive views and Western dress, she's breaking every gender stereotype.

She's particularly influential in the fight for women's rights in Saudi Arabia, which was ranked 141st in the world for gender equality. Al-Taweel was the first Saudi princess to not wear an abaya, a traditional over-garment, in public. She also spoke out against the law prohibiting women to drive — which, thanks to activists like Ameerah, finally ended in September 2017.

Her foundation also supports international humanitarian efforts such as poverty alleviation and disaster relief. In the past, it has provided funding to the flood victims of Pakistan and development assistance in West Africa. Alwaleed Foundations also hopes to foster interfaith dialogue and cultural understanding. Together with Prince Philip, Al-Taweel inaugurated a new center for Islamic studies at Cambridge University.

With her power and intelligence, the princess continues to inspire all the women who are trying to make a difference in the world. Thank you for your awesome work, Ameerah! We can't wait to see what you do next.
