3. McDonald's Invented The Burger Assembly Line

McDonald's might not have invented the concept of fast food hamburger chains, but it did help "fast food" live up to its name, by transforming food preparation into an assembly line, similar to Henry Ford's pioneering assembly lines for mass production of whole automobiles. Dubbed the "Speedee Service System," it relied on unskilled workers each being assigned one simple task in the preparation process. Founding brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald also installed bigger grills to cook multiple hamburgers at once, dressing stations, fryers, soda fountains, milkshake machines and counter service. This efficient system was designed to quickly produce large quantities of items off a limited menu and is still being imitated and adapted around the world today.
