This comforting dish has been filling American bellies since the 19th century, back when the dish was considered 'easily digestable' and good for the health. Why not indulge yourself after a long week, and whip up our restorative milk toast recipe this weekend?
Ingredients (for 1 person):
2 slices of bread
4 tbsp salted butter
1 tsp sugar
2 tbsp light cream
1/2 cup condensed milk
1/2 tbsp cinnamon (optional)
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions:
Butter both sides of the bread and set aside.
Warm up a skillet on medium-low heat, and add one slice of buttered bread. Sprinkle over the sugar, and layer on another slice of buttered bread. Lightly press down on the bread slices with a spatula. They should begin to brown.
Pour over 1 tbsp of light cream over the bread. Move the bread slices around the pan with the spatula so that it soaks up the cream.
Once the cream has absored, flip the bread slices. Pour over the remaining tbsp of light cream and move around the pan once again, so that it's soaked up by the bread.
The bread should be golden and all the cream should be absorbed. Remove from skillet, drizzle over condensed milk, and if you prefer, cover with the cinnamon and/or raisins.
