Making old-fashioned biscuits from scratch is super satisfying! One of America's oldest and most iconic baked goods, these old-fashioned biscuits are a treasured breakfast treat.
Ingredients (for 8 people):
3 cups of flour + 1 tbsp for flouring surface
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
2 sticks butter
1 1/2 cups shop-bought buttermilk
4 tbsp butter (melted, for brushing)
3-inch biscuit/cookie cutter
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 450°F. Grease or line a baking sheet with parchment.
In a large bowl, mix the 3 cups of flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Add the butter, and using your fingers and thumbs, rub it into the dry mixture.
Pour the buttermilk into the mixture, and stir until the ingredients come together in a sticky dough.
With the 1 tbsp of flour, lightly flour a clean surface. Place 1/2 cup of flour in a small bowl.
Put the dough onto the floured work surface. Roll it out, and form into a rough square shape 3-inches thick.
Using the biscuit/cookie cutter, cut out circles. Make sure the circles are as close as possible so that all the dough is used.
Gather up the scraps of dough, and press them together. Cut out any extra biscuits from this extra dough if you can.
Put the biscuits on the baking sheet, making sure they don't touch each other. Place the baking sheet in the oven, and cook the biscuits for 20 min. They should be golden brown.
Whilst the biscuits are baking, melt 4 tbsp of butter.
Remove the biscuits from the oven immediately, and brush with the melted butter.
