Which Historical Foods Do We Still Eat Today?

Honey

The consumption of honey by humans dates back to prehistoric times. Archeological evidence of honey collection has been found in cave paintings dating back at least 8,000 years. It's believed that early humans collected honey from wild hives, and used rudimentary techniques to extract it.

Beekeeping also developed in different cultures throughout history. The ancient Egyptians, for example, practiced beekeeping and used honey as food, medicine, and in religious rituals. There are also records of beekeeping in ancient Greece, Rome, China and many other civilizations.

Honey has been valued for its sweet taste, nutritional value and medicinal properties. For millennia, it has been used as a natural sweetener, food preservative, and as an ingredient in various culinary preparations and traditional remedies.

Honey naturally contains a number of preservatives that give it an extremely long shelf life. During an  archaeological excavations in Egypt a few years ago, containers containing honey from the period was found and deemed to still be edible. We love honey, but would likely pass on a spoonful of that stuff!
