Oktoberfest: Everything You Need to Know About The World's Largest Beer Festival

Bringing Oktoberfest to The Kitchen Table

Kasspatzen or Käsespätzle is a hearty dish that everyone enjoys. Best of all, it's a true Oktoberfest classic! German noodles topped with a heap of cheese = heaven.

Ingredients (for 6 people):

  • 5 cups cooked spätzle noodles (maccaroni noodles work fine too)
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 3 large onions (chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 12 oz. shredded Emmental or Gruyere cheese
  • Salt and pepper (for seasoning)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Butter a casserole dish. 
  3. Melt butter in a medium-sized skillet. Add onions and stir for 20 min. until translucent. 10 min. in, sprinkle with salt and sugar. This should give the onions a nice, brown color.
  4. Layer 1/3 of the noodles in the bottom of the buttered casserole dish, followed by 1/3 of the cheese and 1/3 of the onions. Repeat.
  5. Bake for 10 min. until golden. 
  6. Guten appetit!
