How is Beer Measured at Oktoberfest?

The beer at Oktoberfest is served in Maßkrügen, which we know as steins. The Maß is an old Bavarian unit which measures just over a liter and was commonly used until 1869.

As the festival began in 1810, the usuage of the Maß continued at Oktoberfest even as the measurement died out elsewhere. However, as our little, modern hands aren't used to such a weight of beer, it's important you know how to hold a stein of it correctly!

Vistors are told to hold the mug by the handle with their entire hand and when toasting, to set the mug down once before actually drinking. Traditionally, you're supposed to leave a little beer at the bottom too. This is refered to as norgerl and is supposed to be savoured until the real thirst kicks in — although it's hard to believe you'd be feeling too thirsty after consuming the majority of the Maßkrügen!

For those less interested in having a sore head the following day, a half Maß is available.
