No race day menu is complete without a mint julep—the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby since 1938. This traditional Southern cocktail is known for its deep ties to Southern culture and hospitality, making it the perfect beverage to serve your guests. Try it with a flavor variation for a unique twist on this traditional recipe!
Ingredients (for 1 cocktail):
2 oz Kentucky bourbon
1/2 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated until sugar dissolves, then cooled)
2-4 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
Crushed ice
Mint sprig, for garnish
Optional: add a few blackberries, raspberries, or fresh ginger slices
Instructions:
In a julep cup or old-fashioned glass, muddle the mint leaves gently to release their oils. Be careful not to over-muddle.
If adding optional flavors, add them to the glass at this stage. For example, muddle blackberries, raspberries, or ginger with the mint leaves.
Fill the glass with crushed ice, packing it tightly.
Pour the bourbon and simple syrup over the ice.
Stir the ingredients together until well mixed and the outside of the glass becomes frosted.
Garnish with a mint sprig, gently slapping it between your hands to release its aroma.
