Red Velvet Cake
A classic and elegant dessert, Red Velvet Cake is perfect for special occasions and romantic moments.
Ingredients (serve 8-10):
For the Cake:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 tbsp red food coloring
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp white vinegar
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 1 lb (16 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
For the Cake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
- In another large bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating until smooth and creamy.
- Add the vanilla extract and beat until well combined.
Assembly:
- Once the cakes are completely cool, place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread a thick layer of cream cheese frosting over the top of the first cake layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting.
- Apply a crumb coat (a thin layer of frosting) around the entire cake to seal in the crumbs. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- Apply the remaining frosting to the cake, smoothing it out with a spatula or knife.
- Garnish with cake crumbs, red sprinkles, or any decorations you like.
