"Original" Real Italian - Amato's (Multiple States)
Though nowadays you can find an Amato's in four different states, this gem started out as an Italian sandwich food cart in Portland, Maine. Giovanni Amato's sandwiches were such a success that his cart soon turned into a shop and became a local favorite for the next 50 years. The business was bought by Italian immigrant Dominic Reali in 1972, who slightly modified the "Original Real Italian" by using Greek olives, tangier pickles and a new oil recipe. Unlike most Italian-style subs, it keeps things relatively simple with just ham, cheese and veggies.
