Chick-fil-A's good old fashioned Southern reputation got embroiled in controversy in 2012, when President and CEO Dan Cathy made public his personal views against same-sex marriage. Cathy's company was also found to have given millions of dollars to organizations that were seen as anti-gay by LGBT activists. 

In response, members of the LGBT community and its allies boycotted the fast food chain. More bad news was to come, however. Financial reports showed that the companies profits rose by 12% that year.
