Here’s What Happens in Your Body When You Lose Weight

Your Fat Cells Shrink

Your body breathes away fat particles, but it doesn't actually get rid of fat cells. Those remain a constant number, but instead they simply shrink as you drop weight.

While this might sound like a good thing, it can actually make continued weight loss or maintaining your new weight a bit challenging. That's because as the cells shrink, so do your levels of leptin, a hormone that tells your body when it should feel hungry or full.

Less leptin means your body will think that you're lacking food, so it will amp up the hunger signals it's sending to your brain and get your stomach growling. To combat this, focus on eating enough fiber- and protein-rich foods, which will help make you feel full.
