What Tools You Have Available

Do you only have two burners on your stovetop but the menu you’ve worked up in your head will need three or four going at once? Is your apartment disastrously devoid of an oven? Does the recipe call for that soufflé to be baked in ramekins or that soup to brew in a slow cooker?

It can be easy to get swept away by gorgeous pictures and mouthwatering descriptions on Pinterest, but don’t let yourself make the mistake of buying a bunch of ingredients or even whipping up an entire batter before you realize that you can’t actually finish the recipe. Or that you’re going to have to try to nuke that special Valentine’s surprise in the microwave...

If you plan far enough in advance, there's still time to shift around your menu. There's also time to find and buy the things you're lacking, or ask around to your friends to see if you can borrow them.
