Al Forno - Providence, Rhode Island

In the 1980's, two artists opened an Italian restaurant in little Providence, Rhode Island that would go on to receive international recognition for its grilled pizzas (yes, you read that right) and become an unintended predecessor in the farm-to-table movement. Today, despite the death of co-founder George Germon who is survived by his wife and business partner, Johanne Killeen, Al Forno continues to thrive, thanks to its longstanding reputation and its smoky, thin-crust pies made with simple yet high-quality ingredients on charcoal grills. Note: the pizzas are actually served as appetizers to a broader menu of Italian dishes, but they're worth the trip alone.
