Macarons
Macarons have been around for centuries, but Americans got a real taste for the French cookies this past decade. Colorful and delicate, macarons' surge in popularity was fueled (on both sides of the Atlantic) in part by Sofia Coppola's 2006 film Marie Antoinette, which featured towers of the dessert made by the iconic macaron-makers Ladurée. They opened their first US shop in 2011, and Pierre Hermé—king of macarons—opened in Saks Fifth Avenue's Midtown East location earlier this year.
