Planters' Mr. Peanut

The idea for this advertising icon was not born in a Madison Avenue boardroom, rather, in a fourteen-year-old's imagination. Antonio Gentile won Planters' search for a new mascot in 1916, for which he received a grand total of five dollars. Despite a few modern makeovers, not much has changed in the century since his original sketch: Mr. Peanut remains ever the old-fashioned gentleman. He even has a full name —  Bartholomew Richard Fitzgerald-Smythe — given to him by Gentile himself.

However, in a weird twist of events, a most recent video released by Planters shows the apparent death of Mr. Peanut, who sacrifices himself to save actors Wesley Snipes and Matt Walsh. His funeral is set to be the subject of its upcoming Super Bowl commercial spot, so only time can tell what the brand's creative team has in store.
