This wobbly dessert has long gained its place in Americana. After the invention of powdered gelatin in the mid-1800s, Pearle Bixby Waite decided to add flavoring and sugar to the mix in 1897. And thus Jell-O was born. In the 1950s, the dessert became an integral part of the social life of the typical American housewife, and though its popularity has since fallen slightly, Jell-O remains an American icon.
