Gummy Bears

Gummy bears are one of the few foreign concoctions on this list, having originated in Germany in the 1920's.  A German factory worker named Hans Riegel invented the famous sweet after creating his own candy company called Haribo. Although technically gummy candies already existed in various formats around the world, Riegel developped a line of gelatin-based, chewy, fruity gummies in the shape of dancing bears (linked to a popular European festival tradition at the time). Eventually, Riegels' sons Hans Jr. and Paul took up the business, with lots of ups and downs, and the bears went through many changes before becoming the golden candy they are today. They are still a product of Haribo, which produces 100 million Gold-Bears daily.
