Life Savers

Life Savers are another "veteran" American candy, having been created in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a candy maker from Cleveland, Ohio, who started with an original mint flavor. One year later, Crane sold his candy formula to Edward Noble, who started his own candy company, sellling the mints as "Pep-O-Mint Life Savers." Eight years later, the company began producing solid fruit drops, and a hole was made in the center of the round candies, which had a sort of crystal-like appearance. The original flavors were orange, lemon and lime (sold in separate packages), later adding pineapple and cherry to complete what would become the classic "Five-Flavor" rolls. Today, Life Savers is owned by the Wrigley division of Mars, Incorporated, and the candies still come in mint and classic flavors, in addition to various other spin-offs.
