Salicylates
Salicylate intolerance isn't as common as other types of food sensitivities, but it shouldn't be completely ruled out. Salicylates are compounds derived from salicylic acid, which occurs naturally in plants and are found in foods, medicine (aspirin) and other products. Those who are intolerant may have difficulty metabolizing and expelling them from their bodies. Even small amounts may provoke negative side effects.
Common symptoms include:
- stomach discomfort
- diarrhea
- gas
- hives or rashes
- headaches
- itchy skin
- asthma
- sinus problems
- fatigue
- hyperactivity
- depression
This particular food intolerance is similar to others in that it can be difficult to diagnose, given the scope of the symptoms and the similarities they bear with other food intolerances. There are also no laboratory tests to diagnose it, so the best way to determine whether you are intolerant is to keep a food diary and monitor your symptoms with your doctor.
