Does working out make you alcoholic??
Finally! A good excuse to give up our resolutions to get more exercise...
A study released by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine published in the Health Psychology journal demonstrates that we are more likely to drink alcohol on the days that we do exercise.
The scientists behind the study can't say for sure why there’s such a close link, but they have their suspicions:
“It could be that people who are more physically active on a given day have to use all their willpower and cognitive resources to get themselves to be active, and they don’t have enough willpower left to resist the temptation of a drink at the end of the day,” says David E. Conroy, lead study author.
Other reasons could include the fact that we are more likely to "reward" ourselves after working very hard, and that many social sporting events are prolonged over drinks.
The bad news is that it's been shown that too much alcohol can totally undo all the good that exercise does. In addition to containing unwanted calories, it is possible that alcohol can actually impair muscle recovery.
So what's the solution? Stick to fluids that will actually hydrate you after a workout, and don't waste all your hard work!
