Monte Cristo Sandwich
If you love the iconic Parisian croque-monsieur, you'll probably be a fan of the Monte Cristo sandwich. It's believed to be inspired by the quintessential French dish, made with white bread, ham and cheese (typically emmental or gruyère). American cookbooks from the 1930s to the 1960s dubbed it "French sandwich," "toasted ham sandwich" and "French toasted cheese sandwich". Beyond that, its true origins haven't been unraveled. Once the sandwich is assembled, it's dipped in egg batter and fried in a pan like French toast. It may also include turkey or come in a sweet and savory version, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with maple syrup or fruit preserves. Get the classic recipe here.
