Smorrebrodd - Denmark

Smørrebrød is a huge part of Denmark's food culture and is served literally everywhere in the country, including at sit-down fancy restaurants, casual cafés and local street vendors. It's a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, made with buttered rye bread and a wide variety of toppings. Typically, it comes stacked with some combination of cold cuts, meats, fish, eggs, cheese, vegetables and raw or cooked garnishes. With Denmark being almost completely surrounded by water, fish is an especially popular choice, particularly pickled herring.

Where to eat: For classic Danish smørrebrød, head to Restaurant Schønnemann in Copenhagen. It's only open for lunch and is considered an institution for the iconic open-faced sandwiches, with a historic feel that reflects its longstanding reputation since 1877.
