Pot Pies
In Europe, pot pies have a long tradition and date back to the Middle Ages. They were prepared with a flour and fat dough that was filled with minced meat, spices and other ingredients, and then baked. These pies were a convenient way to preserve and consume meat, as the crust of the dough helped keep the filling protected and fresh.
In Great Britain, pot pies (or meat pies, as they're referred to across the pond!), became super popular during the 16th century, and have since become a staple of British cuisine. The 'pie' originally referred to the pie crust, which covered the meat filling, but over time, the word has been used to refer to the whole thing, including the filling.
Over the centuries, pot pies have evolved and adopted different variations in different regions. Today, it's a much-loved dish within a number of cultures and can be found stuffed with a variety of tasty fillings, from beef, to chicken, to vegetables and cheeses such as butternut and goat's cheese. Delish!
