Meat Skewers

Meat skewers have always  been a popular way of preparing and consuming meat in different cultures throughout history. Although the exact date of their origin cannot be precisely determined, they've likely been popular since our ancestors realized they could cook meat on a fire.

In ancient Mesopotamia, also known as present-day Iraq, Syria, and parts of Iran and Turkey, meat skewers are thought to have been a part of cuisine culture since 1700 B.C.

They were also popular in ancient Greece and Rome, and were known as 'spiedini' in Roman gastronomy. They were often made with chunks of lamb, pork or poultry, which were threaded onto skewers and grilled.

Likewise, in ancient Persia (now known as Iran), meat skewers known as 'kebab' were popular. They were usually made from chunks of lamb or pork, but were mainated in spices before grilled, and are similar to what we'd put on a barbeque today!
