Don't linger for hours

While servers should by no means make you feel rushed throughout your meal, you should still be considerate of their time and not hog the table for several hours. For instance, if you leave after your server's shift ends, you risk costing them tips as well as the tips from customers who would have otherwise ate at your table. Be mindful of the restaurant's hours as well. Most restaurants are courteous about letting guests stay past closing time, but the later you stay, the later you keep your server at work, waiting to clean your table and collect his or her tips.
