Arepas (Venezuela and Colombia)

Arepas are a versatile and delicious cornmeal-based bread popular in both Venezuela and Colombia, known for their crispy exterior and soft, doughy center. Often split open and stuffed with fillings like cheese, avocado, or shredded meat, they are a street food staple that can be enjoyed any time of day. Whether grilled, baked, or fried, arepas are an iconic part of Latin American cuisine.

Ingredients (for 6 servings):

  • 2 cups precooked cornmeal
  • 2½ cups warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the precooked cornmeal and salt. Gradually add the warm water while mixing with your hands until a smooth dough forms. Let the dough rest for 5 min. to allow the cornmeal to absorb the water fully.
  2. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Flatten each ball between your palms to form discs about ½-inch thick and 4-5 inches in diameter.
  3. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil. Cook the arepas for about 5-7 min. on each side until they develop a golden crust and are firm to the touch. If they remain too soft inside, you can bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for an additional 10 min.
  4. Once cooked, let the arepas cool slightly, then slice them open horizontally to create a pocket. Stuff them with your favorite fillings, such as cheese, avocado, or shredded meat, and enjoy warm.
