This apple crisp takes cozy fall flavors up a notch with a nutty, caramel-like twist from brown butter in the oat topping. Juicy, spiced apples meet a buttery, crispy topping that’s just the right amount of sweet. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate autumn dessert experience!
Ingredients (serves 6-8):
For the Filling:
6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
¼ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. lemon juice
For the Topping:
½ cup unsalted butter
1 cup old-fashioned oats
¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup brown sugar
¼ tsp. salt
Instructions:
Set to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat and transfer to the prepared baking dish.
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the butter turns golden brown and releases a nutty aroma, about 4-5 min. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Pour in the browned butter and stir until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Bake for 40-45 min., or until the topping is golden and the apples are tender.
Let cool slightly before serving warm. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
