Brown Butter Mashed Potatoes

These mashed potatoes are taken to a new level with the savory depth of brown butter. This twist on the classic side dish creates a warm, comforting flavor that pairs perfectly with any main course, from holiday feasts to cozy weeknight dinners. Enjoy this as a delicious companion to your favorite mains!

Ingredients (serves 6):

  • 3 lb. Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • Salt, for boiling water and to taste
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup heavy cream, warmed
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: chopped chives or parsley, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to simmer for 15-20 min., or until potatoes are fork-tender.
  2. While potatoes are cooking, melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Continue to cook, swirling occasionally, until butter turns golden brown and develops a nutty aroma, about 3-4 min. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Begin mashing with a potato masher or electric mixer.
  4. Pour the brown butter over the potatoes, making sure to include the browned bits for flavor. Gradually add the warm milk and heavy cream, continuing to mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Transfer mashed potatoes to a serving dish and garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired.
