Classic Tiramisu
Tiramisu is the epitome of Italian desserts, featuring delicate layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and a rich mascarpone cream. This no-bake treat is indulgent yet light, with a hint of cocoa and a perfect balance of sweetness. Preparing it a day ahead enhances the flavors, making it a stunning dessert for any occasion.
Ingredients (for 9 servings):
- 1 1/2 cups brewed espresso or strong coffee, cooled
- 3 Tbsp coffee liqueur (optional)
- 6 large egg yolks
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 16 oz mascarpone cheese, softened
- 1 1/4 cups heavy cream, cold
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 (7-oz) packages ladyfingers (savoiardi)
- 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- Chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
- Combine the espresso and coffee liqueur (if using) in a shallow dish. Set aside to cool completely.
- In a heatproof bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double-boiler method) and whisk constantly for 5-7 min. until the mixture is pale and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Add the mascarpone cheese to the egg mixture and beat until smooth.
- In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully combined and airy.
- Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are moistened but not soggy. Arrange a single layer of ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9x13-inch dish or trifle dish.
- Spread half of the mascarpone cream evenly over the ladyfingers.
- Repeat with another layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone cream.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the layers to set.
- Dust the top with cocoa powder just before serving. Garnish with chocolate shavings for extra indulgence, if desired.
