10 Make-Ahead Desserts for a Stress-Free Holiday

Classic Tiramisu

Tiramisu is the epitome of Italian desserts, featuring delicate layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and a rich mascarpone cream. This no-bake treat is indulgent yet light, with a hint of cocoa and a perfect balance of sweetness. Preparing it a day ahead enhances the flavors, making it a stunning dessert for any occasion.

Ingredients (for 9 servings):

  • 1 1/2 cups brewed espresso or strong coffee, cooled
  • 3 Tbsp coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 16 oz mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream, cold
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 (7-oz) packages ladyfingers (savoiardi)
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Combine the espresso and coffee liqueur (if using) in a shallow dish. Set aside to cool completely.
  2. In a heatproof bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double-boiler method) and whisk constantly for 5-7 min. until the mixture is pale and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  3. Add the mascarpone cheese to the egg mixture and beat until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully combined and airy.
  5. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are moistened but not soggy. Arrange a single layer of ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9x13-inch dish or trifle dish.
  6. Spread half of the mascarpone cream evenly over the ladyfingers.
  7. Repeat with another layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone cream.
  8. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the layers to set.
  9. Dust the top with cocoa powder just before serving. Garnish with chocolate shavings for extra indulgence, if desired.
