New York Style Pizza

Craving the classic taste of a New York pizzeria right at home? This recipe delivers that thin, crispy crust and simple toppings that make New York-style pizza a favorite across the globe. Perfect for a family dinner or a get-together with friends, this homemade pizza will bring a slice of the Big Apple to your kitchen.

Ingredients (serves 4):

Dough:

  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Topping:

  • 1 cup pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 cups shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese
  • Your favorite toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, etc.)
  • Olive oil for brushing
  • Dried oregano and red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix until the dough comes together, then turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 500°F. If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into two equal portions.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, stretch or roll out each portion of dough into a thin circle, about 12-14 inches in diameter. Try to make the edges slightly thicker to form a crust.
  8. If you're using a pizza stone, transfer the dough to a piece of parchment paper or a pizza peel dusted with flour or cornmeal.
  9. If you're using a baking sheet, lightly oil it or line it with parchment paper and transfer the dough onto it.
  10. Spread half of the pizza sauce evenly over each dough circle, leaving a small border around the edges.
  11. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over each pizza.
  12. Add your favorite toppings as desired.
  13. Optionally, brush the edges of the crust with a bit of olive oil for a golden finish.
  14. Transfer the pizzas to the preheated oven. If using a pizza stone, carefully slide the parchment paper with the pizza onto the stone.
  15. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  16. Remove the pizzas from the oven and let them cool for a minute or two.
  17. Optionally, sprinkle with dried oregano and red pepper flakes for extra flavor.
  18. Slice and serve your New York-style thin crust pizzas immediately.

Enjoy your homemade New York-style thin crust pizzas with family or friends!
