Stromboli is essentially pizza in rolled form. You can fill stromboli with anything you like, but be careful not to overstuff it so that the finished roll looks neat and even.
Ingredients (serves 4):
1 classic pizza dough (see above)
1 cup pizza sauce
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup pepperoni slices (or any other preferred deli meats)
1/2 cup sliced bell peppers (optional)
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
1/2 cup sliced black olives (optional)
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp dried basil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Flour (for dusting)
Olive oil (for brushing)
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a large rectangle, about 12x16 inches.
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the sauce. Add the pepperoni slices and any other desired toppings evenly over the cheese.
Sprinkle the minced garlic, dried oregano, and dried basil over the top.
Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edges.
Roll the dough starting from one of the longer sides, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Pinch the edges and ends to seal the stromboli.
Place the stromboli seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top and sides with the beaten egg to give it a golden, shiny crust. Make a few diagonal slits on top of the stromboli to allow steam to escape during baking.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
Allow the stromboli to cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping if desired.
