Barack Obama: Spicy Homemade Chili

Long before his presidency, Barack Obama was known for his homemade chili, a recipe he perfected over the years. His version is hearty, slightly spicy, and packed with protein, featuring kidney beans, tomatoes, and a flavorful blend of spices. It’s a go-to comfort meal that he has enjoyed since his college days and has even shared with the public.

Ingredients (for 4-6 servings):

  • 1 lb ground turkey or beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup chicken or beef broth
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, and sour cream (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic, and sauté for 3-4 min. until softened.
  2. Add the ground turkey or beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Stir in the cumin, oregano, chili powder, and red pepper flakes and cook for 1 min. to toast the spices.
  4. Pour in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, broth, and white wine vinegar. Stir well.
  5. Add the kidney beans, season with salt and pepper, and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 30 min., stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with shredded cheese, fresh cilantro, and a dollop of sour cream.
