Prickly pears

Never tried these exotic, prickly fruits? Sicily grows them in spades, although there they're referred to as fichi di India or Indian figs...despite the fact that they have zero relation to India nor are they figs. In fact, they come from cactus plants native to Mexico that were introduced to Sicily by the Spanish. Once the bristly outer layer is removed, the fleshy pulp is up for grabs, seeds included. Its mild flavor and texture are particular—not for everyone but worth trying at least once.
