Is it dangerous to stand close to a microwave oven?
Most bodies that regulate microwave oven manufacturing set the safe limit of microwave "leakage" as “50 watts per square metre (W/m2) at any point 5 cm away from the external surfaces of the oven.” Body parts that are particularly vulnerable to microwave exposure are the eyes and testes as they have fairly low blood flow in them to carry away excess heat, so it makes sense not to stare at the food with your nose pressed to the glass door, right?
In reality, the "leakage" of most modern microwaves are far below this limit, and although there are a few cases of injury caused by exposure to microwave radiation, these were due to faulty and damaged microwave ovens.
