Germany — Stollen

Although this Christmas treat is casually eaten today, it has a rather political past. The first stollen was made for the Council of Trent in 1545, and later galvanized a religious struggle over the use of butter during the Advent fast (five popes died before Innocent XVIII finally permitted one household to use it). Today's stollen recipes definitely use butter, as well as a variety of sweet dried fruits.
