Mashed Potato woes

If they are lumpy:  Put them back in the pan with more hot milk and butter, and keep mashing  until they're smoother. 

If they are gummy:  Gummy mashed potatoes are a result of being over-worked, but they are easy to transform into a mashed potato casserole (topped with butter and cheese), or formed into patties and fried until golden brown.
