2000: Bourdain publishes his first book - Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly

Carrying on from Bourdain's successful New Yorker article, he released a professional memoir entitled Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, which became a New York Times bestseller. His book revealed the dark and gritty reality about the restaurant industry and states that it is best reserved to only those who have a passionate devotion to food and otherwise noncomformist personality. This solidified his bad boy chef image, but his candor and honesty became the bedrocks of his reputation and career. He later called his book "obnoxious" in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: "It was obnoxious and over-testosteroned, and would be certainly to somebody who doesn’t recognize that dialect."
