Should macaroni and cheese always be made with macaroni pasta? Traditionalists may be shocked to learn it, but many prefer larger pasta such as penne or rigatoni, as it is easier for the cheese sauce to coat both the inside and outside of this larger pasta type. Pastas with lots of nooks and crannies are excellent for holding the cheese sauce. We've got a preference for mid-sized elbow, which gives the satisfying macaroni shape but comes in a heartier size. It might come down to whether you prefer to eat your mac and cheese with a spoon (small pasta) or a fork (bigger types). Whatever you choose, just check the cooking times, as these will vary.
